Boolean Searches
Operators supported
| + | The search term must exist |
| - | The search term must not exist |
| xxx* | Search for a word beginning with "xxx" |
| "phrase" | The search term must exist |
| (expression) | Create a subexpression |
| < > | Used with subexpressions to adjust the relevance of a term |
| ~word | Specify a noise word. It will be included, but ranked lower than other results. |
The following are examples of proper usage for each operator above:
| security policies | Non-boolean (traditional) search. Please see this page for recommendations. |
| +security +policies | Both "security" and "policies" must appear. |
| +security policies | "Security" must appear. If "policies" also appears, the document will score higher. |
| +security -policies | "Security" must appear."policies" must notappear. |
+security +(>policies | "Security policies" or "security personnel" must appear. "security policies"ranks higher. | |
| secur* | This matches "securing", "security", "secure", etc. |
| "security policies" | Matches the exact phrase "security policies". |
Search Recommendations
If you perform a boolean search, be sure to use the * operator
for any word that might be ambiguous, such as in the example above. This is
automatically done for you in a traditional search, but boolean searches allow
you to be much more specific. Thus, it is not automatically added in a boolean
search.
Also, avoid using words shorter than 4 letters. To increase
response times, our search engine automatically ignores such search terms.
Finally, note that the calculation of a document's relevance
is based entirely on search terms when performing a boolean search. In a
traditional search, we also use information such as the document's date and
the location of each term.
